Detroit: Become Human. What can this game make us reflect upon?
"Forgetting who you are, to become what someone needs you to be... Maybe that's what it means to be alive."
I must say that my experience with this game was severely impacted by everything I learned about personality disorders. I'd say that my knowledge about these disorders helped me see the characters in Detroit beyond the surface level. The above quote in particular is one of the key features of borderline personality disorder. I guess, whoever wrote this line is unaware of BPD.
All personality disorders, not just BPD, have one key component that connects them all that is "personality". What is a personality? What defines who you are? They are all called personality disorders because there are complex to understand processes happening within one's mind that are severely distorting what the person is, what he or she wants to be or become and this can go to extreme levels of making the person detached from reality itself. Or they lose themselves and, literally, forget who they are or were. There are some people, and this goes beyond BPD, that can take extreme measures to feel that they are alive. This includes putting yourself into risky situations for example. The examples include gambling, drinking, drugs, sports, committing crimes, etc.
This game discusses "What is it that means to be human and not a machine?". One of the answers is "Because humans feel emotions". If a machine feels emotions, then is it a living being or not?
I really believe that philosophy and psychology are beneficial for game design. On the other side, can also help gamers understand games better.
